Installing The Dentally Imaging Bridge

In order for Dentally to communicate with your Imaging software a small bridge program is required, which can be installed by following the following simple steps.

  1. Install the Dentally imaging bridge chrome extension. This can be found here (click Add to Chrome)

  2. Download the image bridge:

Windows here. Unzip the folder and navigate to the unzipped directory. On the file named “Install” right click and select Run as Administrator

OSX here unzip and copy the DentallyImaging directory into your applications folder. Click to run the install script.

  3. Configure the extension

In Chrome click on the icon in the top right corner which looks like 3 horizontal lines, click settings and then select extensions from the left hand menu. Under Dentally Imaging Bridge click on Options which will open a pop-up window.

Select the imaging software you are linking to. This will then generate a new bridge customised to the software you have selected. Fill in required fields, click save and close the page. Please see below for more details on each of the required fields and general troubleshooting.

When you navigate to a patient in Dentally you should see an icon in the URL bar, clicking on the icon will open the patient in your imaging software.

Multiple Imaging Bridges

You are able to setup multiple bridges with Dentally. To setup a second bridge open the options pop-up as before where you should see your existing bridges. To create a new bridge click Add New Bridge and repeat the process as outlined above.

When multiple bridges are installed clicking on the tooth icon in the address bar will reveal multiple icons, one for each of the installed bridges. Simply select the icon of the program you wish to open.

Default options

Some of the fields may contain a default button which will fill in the field with the standard configuration for your imaging software. Setups do vary however so the defaults may not always be suitable for you. It may at least give you a hint as to the format or approximate location which needs to be entered.

ID Field

Which ID you would like the link to use. If the imaging software has been previously linked to another practice management system then we recommend using legacy ID to avoid creating duplicate patients.

Software Path

This is the path where the program you wish to link to is installed. Usually it is in Program Files directory but depending where it was selected at installation it may also be Program Files (x86). To find the path where the program is located right click on the icon for imaging program (what you usually click to start it) and select Properties. The path is then listed under Start In. Copy this path into the Imaging Software Path field in the extension options however remember to remove the surrounding quotations.

Storage Location Path

This is where the program stores the images it creates. This is usually in a location all computers on the network have access to such as a networked hard drive or server. It varies between systems but is usually decided when the imaging software was installed by a technician from the imaging company. Depending on the software you may be able to locate it by browsing the programs settings or searching for images on the computer/network.

Patient Config File

This is the location of a shared file the program uses to communicate with dentally. When you select the program from the list of options, the extension will be able to provide more information tailored to your selection.

If the bridge isn’t working then it can usually be fixed by addressing one of the following issues.

Do you have permission to install software on the machine?

Installing software requires administrator rights for your computer. If you are experiencing problems look in the following directory C:\program files\. If there is no folder named Dentally Imaging then the user does not have the sufficient privileges to install software. Please contact your system administrator in order to install the Dentally Imaging Bridge.

Are your settings correct?

Check you have specified the correct paths in the Dentally chrome Extension options. Make sure the path includes the final backslash e.g. C:\program files\image software\
